    She is…

When coming up with our plan for the Women in Business program in 2020, we really wanted to have a theme, or motto to live by and reflect on throughout the year. We strive to empower women and have them reflect on who they are and what unique gifts they were blessed with. “She is…” is what we came up with. After a lot of brainstorming to find a word that empowers, we decided to just let the reader or listener fill in their own blank. The beauty of this program is that we have such different, unique, and talented women in the workforce, and they are all equally important…

    Shop Small

As we approach Thanksgiving it’s always a good practice to reflect on what we are thankful for.  At American State Bank we are very thankful for our customers and the communities we are privileged to be a part of.  While we certainly are appreciative of deposits and loans, it’s often overlooked how thankful we are for the relationships we have and the opportunities we have to be of service to others.  Serving others allows us to build teamwork and use our gifts and talents to the best of our abilities while using them for the improvement of others.  What a fulfilling role we get to play and we are thankful to our customers and…

    Budgeting for the Holidays

The first snow has fallen, the colder temperatures are here, and the holiday season and end of the year are just around the corner.  During this time of year, it is a blessing to be surrounded by friends and family. However, many people experience increased stress during the holiday season. Aside from our regular financial concerns, there are new ones this time of year. How much are we able to spend on Thanksgiving dinner?  How will we afford gifts?  How will we pay for the health insurance premium increase?  As we all know, if you don’t control your finances, they will control you. At American State Bank, we care about…

    Security Needs Identity

For National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) I wanted to talk briefly about the difficulty online that is identity. Online personas or identities are usually started by creating an email address, which can be done for free, anonymously, and repeatedly. For most free online email providers, there is no way to verify any of the information provided is accurate, or not intentionally misleading. Once you have an anonymous email address, you can start to sign up for other services: Facebook, YouTube, Reddit, Twitter, etc.  From these anonymous identities arise several scams; spam and phishing emails, fake product reviews on Amazon, fake followers on Twitter and YouTube, and a chorus of voices…

    Farming Over Time

As I think back to my days growing up on the farm, one of my favorite memories was riding on the fender of my dad’s 3020 John Deere tractor during planting season.  The tractor was small and had no cab.  It pulled a four row John Deere planter and I still remember the excitement on the first day we used a new planting monitor.  The monitor was about the size of a shoe box, had four small lights, and about two or three switches.  As the memory is not very distant in my mind, the technology used in that small 3020 tractor, the planting monitor, and other technology used in farming thirty years ago is…

    Tailgates

It’s that time of year again; summer is winding down, temperatures are dropping, and school is starting! At American State Bank, we’re dedicated to our local schools and communities, and during this time of year we like to show our support through sponsored tailgates. Whether it’s burgers, brats, hotdogs, or pulled pork, these tailgates are a great way for ASB to feed the community and give back to our local schools!  Community is one of our core values. However, it’s not just a value of ASB, but of our employees as well! We have over 100 employees volunteer at our tailgates every year, and we do it because we care……

    Financial Education

“Thank you for banking with us” is a common phrase that can be heard during the school year at the Spalding Catholic school in Alton.  Grades 4 through 6 have the opportunity to participate in the school savings program with the help of the Alton branch of American State Bank. This is a great way to learn awesome life skills that you will need to have in the future, starting from a young age. Every Wednesday morning from 8:15 – 8:30, the Spalding Bank is open for business. During this time, students can make deposits and withdrawals.  The students fill out a deposit slip and hand that in along with…
